The Taranaki motor neuron disease (MND) support group is pleased to host 'Motor neuron disease: Triggers and therapeutics in the New Zealand context'.
Taranaki consistently has approximately twice as many cases of motor neuron disease per capita as the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Local GPs are encouraged to join the MND Taranaki support group for this hui.
Dr James Cleland will speak first on symptoms and diagnosis of MND. Then Dr Emma Scotter will give an overview on what happens to the brain and muscles and then discuss causes, including genetics and inheritance from international and her New Zealand work. Finally, she will discuss therapies.
Dr Emma Scotter runs the motor neuron disease research lab at Auckland University and was recently made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the King's birthday honours for her work on MND.
Dr James Cleland is a clinical neuromuscular neurologist with a particular interest in all aspects of MND and is pushing the boundaries of MND care in New Zealand.
Please RSVP to either Jennifer Smart or Gina Kaye. This hui will be catered.
This talk will be repeated to staff at the Taranaki Base Hospital Grand Round on Thursday 14 November.
