A "quick notification" process has been set up in Waikato Hospital to ensure that if a patient dies whilst on a ward or Emergency Department, their GP is made aware. Currently the practice may not be aware of a death until a discharge letter has been written and sent which can take several days or longer.
Whilst this process will not contain all the information that will be in the formal discharge summary, it will allow the clinic to be aware, and to offer timely support to whānau if needed.
Many thanks to the Waikato GPL team for the work involved in getting this system in place.
