Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (School Nursing)

Lakes | Taranaki | Waikato | Tairāwhiti | Clinical | Management | 12/05/2022

Calling all school nurses! The new Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (School Nursing), developed in conjunction with Melissa Davidson, Pinnacle clinical services manager - School Based Health Services, is a unique professional development opportunity that recognises the special environment and skills needed to work as a school nurse in Aotearoa.

Registered nurses working within the School-Based Health Services play an integral role in providing, leading and coordinating care to rangatahi/young people that is evidence-based and person-centred. School nurses work autonomously and within an interdisciplinary team, working in partnership with rangatahi to improve rangatahi health outcomes.

The Postgraduate Certificate of Health Sciences (School Nursing) at University of Waikato is the first post-graduate formal pathway specifically for school nurses in Aotearoa/NZ. It is a 60-point, full-time postgraduate qualification spread across two trimesters.

The programme will expand on prior knowledge and expertise and enable you to more comprehensively respond to the health needs of school-aged rangatahi in the midland and Aotearoa population. There will be particular focus on mental health and addiction, improving accessibility to care, equity for Māori and Pacific people, sexual/sexuality health and prominent issues that are currently shaping the school nursing role in Aotearoa/NZ while also creating a safe support network within the group setting.

Papers include:

  • HLTSC506: Special project (30pts), B trimester, July 2022
  • HLTSC 561: Primary healthcare practice (30 pts), A trimester, February 2023.
