In August 2018 the Waikato DHB community laboratory clinical governance group (CLCGG) approved a programme enabling registered nurses (RNs), through delegated authority, to order specified lab investigations on behalf of their practitioners. This supports the work nurses do with a range of patients and whānau and is the only approved system in place for registered nurses to sign lab forms on behalf of practitioners.
Note: primary care assistants/medical centre assistants do not have delegated authority to order lab tests on behalf of clinicians.
There are a lot of benefits to implementing this programme, from patient and whānau to nursing and practice systems. There are a large number of practices that have successfully implemented this programme into their nursing services with positive feedback received.
