Waikato DHB has spoken directly with Southern Cross regarding their communication with patients in the pre-op process.
It appears they have been requesting patients provide proof of negative test (asymptomatic testing) within a fairly tight window of 48-72 hours - without consultation with the DHB or primary care.
The DHB have explained due to the testing surge this type of testing is not urgent, and that it creates significant work and pressure on practices.
Southern Cross have acknowledged the error and lack of communication. They will remove the 'test at your GP' option in the pre-op letters, and are looking to contract with saliva test providers in the near future.
If you are aware of other private hospitals putting out similar messaging please let your practice development facilitator know.
