Sport Waikato has a clear vision for ‘everyone out there and active’ and this vision remains relevant after 34 years of operation. However, over the last ten years, despite our best interventions we have not seen physical activity rates in the Waikato region increase. This has made us reflect as an organisation on our ‘why’ and how we operate.
We have reviewed our strategy – Moving Waikato 2025 - which helps define our clear purpose in targeting specific demographics within the region in regard to increase participation in play, sport and active recreation. What this has resulted in, is a clear, board mandated way which Sport Waikato needs to operate to remain relevant and to have maximum impact with the public funding we receive. And we now have a big goal of 75 per cent of the Waikato region physically active.
To have maximum impact Sport Waikato needs to work at a strategic level, influencing systems, partnering with leaders and enabling practitioners within those systems to increase the opportunity for people to move and be active for life.
As of 18 December 2020, the Green Prescription programme and Active & Well brand will no longer be delivered by Sport Waikato.
This will affect the following programmes:
Sport Waikato is currently in consultation with the Waikato District Health Board on the future of the above services after Sport Waikato’s contract end date, and they will notify all relevant stakeholders when final decisions have been made.
We will still be accepting referrals until Friday 27 November, 2020. Clients will receive a shorter service but we will still be able to either meet clients kanohi ke ti kanohi (face to face) or over the phone until November. While the service may be shorter, we will ensure all referrals receive the high standard we have delivered for over 20 years.
Sport Waikato has a long and proud history with Green prescription, and we acknowledge all of those referrers, medical professionals, recreation centres, gyms, volunteers and local communities who have contributed so much to the programmes.
