Radiology reports for outpatients at Taranaki DHB have recently been delayed.
This has been exacerbated in the last two weeks as the outsourcing provider used by the DHB for overflow reporting, particularly for outpatient CT, plain film and MRI, are themselves overwhelmed and are no longer able to accept this work. This has led to increased delays in reporting of these studies.
Taranaki DHB is imminently bringing on an additional provider to assist with this work and resolve the backlog, however it is likely this situation will persist for at least this month. This has led to a significant increase in calls to the duty radiologist and reception requesting reports. While these requests are entirely reasonable, they do also divert the attention away from reporting.
Consequently the DHB has requested that if you identify studies that are unreported, that unless there is an urgent clinical risk, please email the NHI and details to Ryan Walkin (head of department) and radiology reception to arrange for these studies to be reported the same day.
As much notice as possible is appreciated. If there is an urgent clinical risk, please contact radiology reception by phone on 7111 or 753 7873. It would be appreciated if the duty radiologist number is used for requests and other clinical queries only in the first instance.
This issue does not affect inpatient and ED studies, which will be reported in and out of hours on the same day as usual.
