Pathlab: New HPV dry tube collection kit

Waikato | Lakes | Clinical | 20/10/2025

From late October 2025, Pathlab will introduce the new Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) dry tube collection kit, replacing the existing HPV buffer (wet) tube kit.

Key changes

  1. Tube appearance: The new pink-capped tube has two rows of small 2D barcodes and an added pink strip. Ensure one barcode row remains visible after labelling so instruments can read it.
  2. No buffer: The tube is now dry — the buffer is added automatically in the lab, eliminating spillage risk.
  3. Instructions: Full collection instructions are now accessed via a large 2D barcode printed on the kit packaging. Scanning this code will take users to the updated HPV dry tube collection instructions online. These can be viewed on a mobile device or printed for patients if needed.
  4. Stability: Collected dry tubes are stable for up to 30 days at 2–30°C, but should be sent to the lab promptly.

Transition guidance

  • Use all existing HPV wet swab kits before switching.
  • Do not empty the buffer from old wet tubes — if missing, the sample will require recollection.
  • Avoid collecting samples that are heavily blood-stained, as these often return “Invalid” results. Wait until bleeding has settled if possible.

Please send feedback to Murray Robinson, service lead, microbiology and molecular pathology.
