The supplier of Pathlab’s total protein test has modified their calibrator to ensure traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This adjustment has resulted in a 4 per cent increase in total protein results. This change is within clinically acceptable limits, as determined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Pathlab will be updating its total protein and globulin reference intervals, as well as the associated trigger values for recommending repeat testing and for protein electrophoresis.
For a period of three months, the following comment will appear on all total protein reports:
“TP results have increased by 4% following re-standardisation of the assay. The reference interval has been adjusted accordingly. The assay is otherwise unchanged.”
New reference intervals (effective Monday 3 November 2025)
| Test | Age range | Current ref interval | New ref interval | Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total protein | 0–5 months | 40–65 | 42–68 | g/L |
| Total protein | 6 months–1 year | 46–68 | 48–71 | g/L |
| Total protein | 1–2 years | 51–70 | 53–73 | g/L |
| Total protein | >2 years | 60–80 | 62–83 | g/L |
| Globulin | All ages | 25–41 | 27–43 | g/L |
These updates ensure continued accuracy and consistency with international standards.
