Te Whatu Ora recently hosted a primary care sector webinar focusing on the rollout of the new primary care health target. If you were unable to attend the live session, the full video recording and presentation slides have now been released for public access.
The webinar addressed the foundational role of primary care alongside the pressing issues currently impacting the sector, including workforce shortages, capitation funding constraints, and patient access barriers.
The new health target: An overview of the target announced by the Minister of Health—aiming for 80 per cent of primary care appointments to occur within 7 days of booking by 2030.
Tactical action plan: Insight into the $641 million investment over four years to grow doctor and nurse pathways, improve medicine access, and enhance community-based delivery models.
Data & measurement frameworks: A technical breakdown by Health NZ advisors regarding how the target is measured using practice PMS data, including specific data inclusions, exclusions, and findings from the 18 pilot practices.
Implementation timeline: Next steps for the sector, highlighting that data collection begins on 1 July 2026, with the initial Q1 results scheduled for publication by the end of 2026.
