This programme is available for women with diabetes in pregnancy who need to start insulin and have been referred by the diabetes in pregnancy team.
The initial education of meter use, diet and subsequent assessment of blood glucose resulting in a decision to start insulin will be done by the diabetes in pregnancy team.
A script and insulin starter pack will be provided to the patient by the diabetes in pregnancy team.
This service is part of the Advanced Primary Options programme.

Patients not domiciled in Te Whatu Ora Waikato area.
A maximum of one claim per patient can be submitted for Diabetes in Pregnancy - Insulin Start.
Includes GP/RN consult time and any consumables: $90.00 (GST incl.).
Submit your referral via Primary Options using the initial condition coding: Diabetes Pregnancy Insulin Initiation.
When invoicing for the service please lodge an ‘outcome and invoice’ form and select the ‘Insulin Start: Diabetes in Pregnancy’ invoice.
Practices are required to provide sufficiently detailed consultation notes to determine appropriate use of funding.
The service is funded by Te Whatu Ora.

The special authority criteria will be the same as when special authorities were suspended in May 2024. This will again allow prescribing according to national guidelines and best practice. Pharmac has assured the intention is for no further suspensions of special authority criteria for GLP-1 agonists to allow ongoing access for those who meet criteria. To ensure availability, it continues to be important these medications are only prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
