Long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)

Overview

This programme provides funding for contraceptive consultation including administration of Depo Provera, and the insertion of contraceptive implants and IUDs to target populations. Removal of these devices as necessary is also funded. These devices can be inserted by any health professional. 

These contraceptives are referred to within the programme as long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCS).

This service is part of the Advanced Primary Options programme.

Your Pinnacle Services Contract applies to this service. By claiming for this service, you have indicated that you have read and agreed to the business rules set out here.

Which practices can claim for this service?

All Pinnacle practices in Tairāwhiti region can claim for this service.

Service components

This funding provides the following at no cost to the patient:

  • contraceptive consultations including administration of Depo Provera
  • insertion of contraceptive implants and IUDs
  • removal of these devices.

There is a maximum of two no-cost contraception consultations per woman per annum, or a maximum of four per annum for Depo Provera.

Who is eligible for the service?
  • All women aged 15-44 years 

  • Practices who hold a Free Under 25s Contraceptive and Sexual Health Agreement can only claim consultations under one agreement, not both.
  • This programme is also funded for casual patients who may be referred to you via another service or may be drop ins. In these cases, you can only invoice for this service and no other off set can be claimed.
  • Patients domiciled in Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti area.
Who is excluded from the service?

Patients not domiciled in Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti area.

When is the service complete?

The episode of care ends once the patient’s treatment has been completed and the outcome and claim are submitted.

Payment will be made when the outcome has been lodged for the case.

Claims can be lodged for different services for the same patient if eligibility rules apply. Please note that you can not claim a consultation for the same day you claim for insertion and/or removal of a device.  

Claiming guidelines

Please make your claim via Primary Options, select LARCS and then attach the appropriate invoice(s).

Claims are all inclusive of the consultation, the insertion, observation time and consumables.

Prices listed below are GST Inclusive

  • No-cost contraceptive consultation which may include Depo Provera administration (VLCA and/or CSC) $19. (Maximum 4 per year).
  • Jadelle or IUD insertion $172.50.
  • Jadelle removal $172.50.
  • IUD removal $86.25.
  • LARC removal and insertion during the same consultation $258.75.

Please note that you can not claim a consultation for the same day you claim for insertion and/or removal of a device.  

What level of clinical notes do I need to submit?

Practices are required to provide sufficiently detailed consultation notes to determine appropriate use of funding.

Please indicate the patient's current contraception.

Does the patient have to pay?

No. A patient co-payment cannot be charged.

How the service is funded?

This service is funded by Te Whatu Ora.
