Medical fitness to drive occupational therapy assessments (referral)

Overview

This service is delivered by Occupational Therapy Community Solutions (OTCS) and provides a driving assessment to determine fitness to drive.

This is a referral service only. It is not a claimable service. 

This is NOT a clinical guideline. 

Details

Service components

The service is provided by an occupational therapist.

Full assessment ($700)

  • Pre assessment administration – phone and email contact with patient, referrer and NZTA to confirm license status, driving instructor coordination, appointment administration i.e., info pack including consent and appointment letter emailed or posted to client.
  • A 90-minute off-road assessment – general background, driving history, cognitive screen using the Mini ACE, and DriveSafe/DriveAware, with feedback and debrief.
  • A 60 minutes on-road assessment - commences from patient’s home or location of their choice in their local area, with driving instructor, 45-to-50-minute drive with 15-minute feedback and debrief. Written outcome summary.
  • Post assessment report to relevant parties and any relevant follow up.
  • One additional driving session with driving instructor if needed i.e., to check if driving advise is applied or to address poor driving habits impacting on driving safety, could also be used for pre-assessment drive if patient has had a long absence from driving or if anxiety is a concern.

Off-road screen ($150)

  • An hour-long session, a pre-assessment questionnaire, a basic interview and DriveSafe/DriveAware test. 
  • A report is generated by the DriveSafe/DriveAware test.
  • Should the patient progress to a full assessment the $150 will be deducted from the $700.

Any patients living in the Taranaki region.

Which practices can refer to this service?

All practices in the Te Whatu Ora Taranaki region can refer to this service.

This is not a claimable service; this is a service that you can refer patients to.

Does the patient have to pay?

Yes, there is a fee of $700 (including GST).

Funding may be available via WINZ.
