Overview

This service is a free primary care based sexual health and contraception service for under 25-year olds. 

The aim is to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people and to improve access to first level GP services in order to facilitate:

  • a sexual health service that is well utilised by youth
  • a sexual and reproductive health service that is confidential, safe, accessible and friendly for young people
  • an increased cervical screening rate.

The objectives of the service are:

  • to ensure all young people have access to free contraceptive advice and clinical services
  • to reach young people who live in rural or isolated areas with regard to the above services
  • to ensure contraceptive services for young people are confidential, friendly and safe.

Your Pinnacle Services Contract applies to this service. By claiming for this service, you have indicated that you have read and agreed to the business rules set out here.

Which practices can claim for this service?

All Pinnacle practices in Te Whatu Ora Lakes region can claim for this service and Anamata Youth Café.

Service components

Pinnacle practices can accept self-referrals and provide the following services.

  • Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of sexual transmitted infections (STI) Sexual and reproductive health education and disease prevention advice.
  • Contraceptive advice and prescribing.
  • Cervical screening.
  • Contact tracing.
  • Referral to specialist sexual and reproductive health services, if required.

Referrals may also come from various sources, including midwives, sexual health clinics, marae health clinics and other sources.

A GP or practice nurse consult is provided.

Who is eligible for the service?

All young people under 25 years of age seeking contraceptive advice or clinical service are eligible, regardless of enrolment status, i.e. the service is available to both casual and enrolled young people.

The service is principally aimed at young men and women who are:

  • Māori or Pacific
  • in difficult circumstances
  • rurally isolated.

The service can only be delivered by a GP/NP (or their locum) or practice nurse through a Pinnacle practice. 

Who is excluded from the service?

People 25 years and older are not eligible for the service.

Services that cannot be claimed under this service include:

  • services normally provided under the maternity services contract i.e. urine pregnancy testing (positive)
  • urine pregnancy testing (negative result only)
  • prescription charges
  • sexual abuse and assault services normally covered by ACC
  • women who are eligible to claim via the priority women cervical screening project, or the long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) programme.
When is the service complete?

Each consultation is stand alone. A young person can access the service on multiple occasions. 

Claiming guidelines

This price is inclusive of GST  

Sexual health consultation – GP or nurse:                                                                                                       $32.20 

Claims will only be paid on completion of the electronic form, provided by Pinnacle Midlands Health Network

All fields of the form must be completed.

What level of clinical notes do I need to submit?

You will be asked to select a consultation reason. Select from:

  • contraception
  • STI check
  • pregnancy check
  • cervical smear.

Date of consultation, provider type (GP or nurse) and basic demographic information is also collected.

Does the patient have to pay?

No. No co-payment is allowed if claiming for the consult under this service.

How is the service funded?

This service is funded from Pinnacle's flexible funding budget.
