The increasing rates of cancer survivorship has led to GPs dealing more and more with the sequelae of cancer surgery and adjuvant therapies in patients. Lymphoedema is often a troubling consequence of such treatment. With new technology, the assessment and management of lymphoedema has changed. GPs have an important role to play in diagnosing and facilitating treatment for lymphoedema sufferers.
Dr Vani Prasad is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with expertise in lymphoedema surgery. In addition to his specialist craniofacial and microsurgical training he undertook further fellowship training in lymphoedema supermicrosurgery at the National Centre for Global Health and Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. Vani works as a visiting medical specialist at the Australian Craniofacial Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide and offers Lymphoedema surgery in private practice in Adelaide and Melbourne. Vani has been an invited speaker at numerous state, national and international conferences to talk about his experience in ICG lymphatic mapping and lymphoedema surgery.
He is also actively involved in surgical volunteer work in East Timor and Indonesia through the Overseas Specialist Surgical Association of Australia (OSSAA).
