Pinnacle new graduate nursing programme

Published: 18/06/2024 | 1 file | Document

The 12-month programme partners with the regional Health NZ / Te Whatu Ora Nurse Entry to Practice Programmes (NETP) and provides training, education and support for nurses wanting to develop a career in a primary health setting.

We are pleased to be able to support the 2025 programme, there are ten placements available.

Expressions of interest open for Pinnacle New Graduate Programme (Jan/Feb 2025 intake)

Expressions of interest are now open to practices keen to support new graduates in the Pinnacle New Graduate Programme (January/February 2025 intake).

Two additional placements are available for the 2025 programme - one in Waikato and one in Taranaki - bringing the total to 10.

Please submit your expression of interest (form linked below) to support one of the 10 graduates for the 2025 programme by 5pm, Friday 19 July 2024. Note: The 2024 mid-year advanced choice of employment (ACE) applications closed in April.

We are inviting expressions of interest (EOI) from practices across the network that:

  • are keen to explore an approach with Pinnacle to support the 2025 programme
  • have a qualified nurse preceptor or a nurse willing to undertake Level 700 or local Te Whatu Ora requirements before the programme begins.

These placements are contestable.

If you have any questions relating to the programme, please do not hesitate to contact the nursing leads by emailing nursing@pinnacle.health.nz.

 Key points of the model

  • The practice can use an existing nursing FTE as a dedicated graduate nurse placement, or can create a supernumerary position to plan for succession. The practice employs the graduate for a fixed term 12 month period at 0.8 FTE. At the end of the fixed term, a practice may choose to provide ongoing employment to the graduate nurse.
  • Practices actively participate in the interview and selection process for candidates in partnership with Pinnacle and their local Te Whatu Ora NETP coordinator.
  • The supernumerary period for the graduate is 12 weeks, with Pinnacle covering the salary for this period. After that, the graduate nurse forms part of the practice’s nursing team FTE.
  • A nurse preceptor within the practice supports each position.
  • Pinnacle will provide support for the graduate and preceptor throughout the programme, including an orientation and peer group support meetings.
  • The graduate will have access to further professional development to grow the role of the practice nurse alongside their local Te Whatu Ora NETP education component.
  • Pinnacle will fund selected professional development training costs during the programme. This includes the diabetes short course level 700 or relevant training, cervical screening level 700 or other approved provider courses, and the vaccinators course.

Eligibility

Graduate nurses must meet all of the following criteria.

  • Enrolled in the NETP programme at Te Whatu Ora - the selection occurs nationally twice per year for a February intake and September intake, with numbers accepted, based on funding from HWD.
  • Employed at a minimum of 0.8 FTE employment (32 hours/week).
  • Have not practiced as a registered nurse for longer than six months.

They also need to:

  • be a New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand residency permit
  • hold a nursing degree from a New Zealand registered nursing programme accredited by the NCNZ
  • hold registration with the NCNZ within the Registered Nurse Scope of Practice, 'in good standing' (ie, have no restrictions on that registration that would negatively impact on their ability to participate in their placement/rotations in the NETP programme)
  • have a current annual practicing certificate.

Following a recent case, the Ministry of Health is clarifying the use of the Mental Health Act (1992) for frontline doctors and nurse practitioners. This concerns situations where someone may require compulsory assessment and treatment.

Furthermore, the Ministry recommends all frontline doctors and nurse practitioners in the community, rural hospitals and emergency departments, engage with training such as that available via Te Pou on the application of the Mental Health Act.
