Asthma is a major public health problem in Aotearoa New Zealand affecting up to 20 per cent of children and adults. The prevalence rates, particularly in Māori and Pacific adults, are among the highest in the world. Managing asthma requires a partnership between the patient, their whānau and their healthcare team. The most common reasons for poor asthma control are inadequate inhaler technique and poor compliance/adherence.
The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines provide simple, practical and evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, assessment, and management of asthma in adults and adolescents (aged 12 and over) in a quick reference format.
This presentation provides a brief overview of current best practice and information around funded consultations available to patients in the pre-winter period.
