Te Whatu Ora is progressing the National Primary Care Dataset and practices are being asked to review an interim Information Sharing Agreement to support the first phase of data collection. This sits alongside other supporting material, including the Data Access Framework and encounter data definition.
To support practices, we’ve pulled together key resources in one place, including a walkthrough video from Dr Jo Scott-Jones, the presentation slide deck, FAQs, and supporting information from Health NZ.
The first phase relates to general practice appointment and encounter data. Te Whatu Ora says this is an administrative dataset, not a clinical one, and that consultation notes and other clinical narrative content are not included.
You'll find all these resources in the 'Files and links' section, below.
Te Whatu Ora Health NZ has said practices will be asked to sign the interim Information Sharing Agreement in March to allow data collection to begin in April. It is separate from the broader Access and Use Agreement, which will come later. Practices can choose to opt out, and the date to indicate that is 31 March 2026.
If further information or updated resources are provided, we’ll add them here.
